How to Support Someone Suffering from Depression

Depression is a mood disorder characterized by persistent feelings of sadness and lack of interest. It can be caused by an array of different things including genetics, trauma, death/loss, or a major life changing event. It is a common mental health disorder in the US and according to the National Institute of Mental Health in 2020 alone, an estimated 21.0 million adults had at least one major depressive episode. Depression can look differently for everyone. Some common characteristics include, low mood, lack of interest in activities, trouble concentrating, changes in appetite/sleep, feelings of hopelessness/worthlessness, and even suicidal thoughts. How can we support a friend or loved one suffering from depression? Below are a few suggestions:

  1. Let them know you’re there for them. A listening ear and asking if there is anything you can do to easy their stress can go a long way.

  2. Be encouraging in a respectful and helpful way. Asking before offering your opinion is something we should all practice doing. Also, toxic positivity is a thing. Sometimes there is no brighter side at that moment or anything positive that a person can reflect and be thankful for. They just have to feel their feelings, they are valid.

  3. Encourage them to seek professional help! It can start with seeking their primary care physician and letting them know about their symptoms. Or they can contact mental health care providers directly.
