How to Do the Work By: Dr. Nicole LePera Book Review

As a mental health professional, I had mixed thoughts about this book. The book was good at introducing key components of trauma and how it affects us beginning at a young age. I did like how the book highlighted “self-healing” but thought this movement can potentially be used negatively by those who truly need the assistance of professionals such as psychiatrists/psychologists. Another area I like that was highlighted was the connection that nutrition/our gut has to mental health. This is more times than not overlooked. I think this book can be empowering for those who know nothing about mental health, and it can be eye opening. Doing the work can be done but it can’t be done alone. The only thing that can be done alone is having the drive to want to do the work.

Key points and/or interesting aspects I took from the book:

  1. TRULY addressing trauma CANNOT be done ALONE.

  2. Everyone’s trauma is unique and cannot be generalized.

  3. Doing the work, takes time and one self-help book isn’t going to fix everything.
